Wolf Profile in Pastels

by Thomas
(San Antonio, TX)

I drew this sometime in 2007 while using a wolf statue as the subject. It was my initial foray into the pastel medium. I think it turned out well. There are changes I would make now, but I'm on to bigger things. I'd say I spent about 45 mins on this. I typically spend 45 mins to an hour on any one sketch.

I like drawing on black paper at times, because it presents a wonderful contrast between the mundane white. Sort of giving it a surreal look.

Good

Tom,

It's good. Pastels take a lot of time and patience so the amount of detail is again good. The nose is a little off (but since its pastel work I'll let it slide).

Very good I must say! I am a hard critic so don't take my comments too personally. Also I have been an artist for a long time so don't blow away my comments. Very good background with color. Though at your final detailing you get a little rushed. Make your wolf flat instead of "coming alive"

Surreal Indeed
by: Jeff

Thomas,

What a neat drawing. You're right - switching over to a black background really does give off a surreal look.

From experience, I know that pastels can be messy to work with. It takes patience, and I can tell you have it!

I especially like the 'black-on-black' lines that outline the wolf's head, giving it shape and helping to bring the rest of the head into view.

Very well done.

Jeff
