In J.R.R. Tolkien's famous book "The Hobbit" - Smaug the dragon, sleeps in the lonely mountain, atop hoards of treasure that he stole from the dwarves...

Some 150 years prior!

Here in this lesson, let's draw a simple cartoon version of the beast, showing him sitting atop a mountain of gold, and in his left hand...

Holding the Arkenstone.

...

Have fun with this lesson, and as you're working on through - see if you can change the look of the dragon, according to how you imagined him to look.

Let's begin!

How to Draw the Smaug the Dragon

First thing then, let's begin drawing Smaug - by coming up with a simple framework of basic shapes.

The purpose here, is to give you an idea - of how everything will come into place later on.

Remember, you don't need to sketch out a framework like this if you don't feel you need one. I simply include this - to help establish form early on.

Here's the structure of our drawing...

And next - with the structure in place...

Begin drawing Smaug - starting with his right eye, and snout...

Bringing the head into view - you can see how the shapes in behind - help to establish structure and form, as you move forward.

Here's how it looks now - with more of the head in view...

Fading our previously drawn lines to grey, as we move forward...

Next - go ahead and sketch in a few more details in and around the head, and also - begin with a long swooping line, to bring forth the wing.

Coming along nicely - here's how it's looking...

Next up - complete the wing area, sketch in his right leg - and one more thing...

Draw Smaug the dragon's right hand.

You'll notice - I have his hand positioned, as though he's holding something. You may want to sketch in some jewelry here - necklaces, and other precious items, hanging from his grasp.

Here's how it looks...

OK.

A couple more lines to help bring Smaug's body into view. And then, down below...

A small bump - indicating part of the 'mountain of gold' that he's sitting upon.

Next up, go ahead and draw Smaug's outstretched left arm - and also...

Sketch in more of the gold pile, and part of his tail as well.

It might look something like this...

OK.

Close to finishing up now!

Keep going - and here... sketch in his left hand, as it will be seen - holding the Arkenstone...

And also - mirror a second horn on the top of his head.

Like this...

And finally - here's Smaug the dragon - minus the underlying framework, and also - with a few additional details added...

Take a look at the line that distinguishes his belly, the teeth, and also - the white marks on his pupils:
