Neon Genesis Evangelion - Eva Unit 01

In the hit anime series & movies - Neon Genesis Evangelion, Eva Unit 01 is a mecha piloted by Shinji Ikari. One of several evas (designed by Ikuot Yamashita), its job is to protect the city of Tokyo-3.
Number one featured here - has always been my favorite. In the series, one of the coolest things it did, was go into 'Berserker Mode' minus the need for any power source.
Here - let's create a likeness - homage so to say to the series, of this amazing mecha! Perhaps after working through this lesson, you can transfer the steps over to creating another one - maybe #00?
Let's begin!
First Step - The Structure of Your Evangelion
Beginning with a simple structure to work from, you'll be much happier as you progress through this lesson. Really - there are a number of steps involved here - and this 'planning ahead of time' will help you move forward more easily.
Here's how the structure looks...
Notice how I've included orange lines to mark off key features - protrusions at various areas on the mecha. Unit one is especially unique for this reason - and most of all (I'd say) due to its 'dinosaur-like' horn on its head.
All done your framework then? Lines nice and light??? Great! Let's get a move on!
Second Step - Draw the Head of Your Eva
In this likeness to the real eva from Neon Genesis Evangelion, I've gone ahead and stylized it in a way that's different from how you might expect it to look. One key difference - is that the head here is bigger. Surely you, you'll be able to pick out some others.
Use these images to help you bring into view - the head of your mecha...
Even more 'cartoony' - you can see I've added a tongue! Also, the teeth are clearly seen as separate from the mouth - and the back of its head (helmet?) is shaped slightly different.
Head all finished then? Alright - let's move on to the upper body now...
Third Step - Draw the Upper Body
In drawing the upper body - I've kept a specific sequence from which you can more easily create this mecha. There may be some parts that you want to switch around, and if so - feel free. Still, this is a nice way to go about it...
Alright - so far so good. In the next step, we'll finish off our Neon Genesis Evangelion character by completing the rest of the body - from mid-section to toe.
Continuing on!
Final Step - Finish Your Neon Genesis Evangelion Mecha!
Well - we're just about finished now. With the upper part in place, now it's time to finish things off, beginning with its mid-section, and moving on down to the feet.
Stylized in my own unique way, use the following images to help you finish off your character...
Ah - that's better! With a little color - my favorite Eva is finally taking on a closer likeness to the one in the series. Of course - that's the beauty of adding color to a black and white drawing -- makes all the difference in the world.
How about yourself? Actually - this is a pretty detailed/slightly advanced lesson - so if need be, take a second run through to 'fine-tune' any areas you'd like to see better.
And there it is - Neon Genesis Evangelion - Eva Unit 01... complete! :-)
