Lighthouse at Sunset

by Gabrielle
(Virginia, USA)

This may seem weird but I was actually inspired by a girl's shirt at my drama class. She was wearing a white, black, and dark green shirt and I thought to myself, that would make a great lighthouse. Though it took me 2 months before I finally drew this I'm very proud of it. The sunset could have been better but I used more of my artistic skills on the lighthouse and when I got to the sunset I was tired and ready to finish up the picture so I rushed through it so it's not as great as the lighthouse. The top of the lighthouse was actually inspired by Ocracoke Lighthouse.

Leave comments and suggestions! I may work on a second one if I get some good ideas but don't expect it :)

Nice work Gabrielle

Hi Gabrielle.

I like your drawing here. One suggestion I'd like to make, is with respect to the coloring job. Looking at your lines, I can tell you're using a standard grade pencil crayon - am I right?

Well - something that I find really neat when it comes to pencil crayons, is working with oil-based ones, Prismacolors are my favorites.

What you'll find, is that after you 'lay down' the colors, you can then blend them, to achieve a gradient affect. So for example, the part where the sun transitions into the sky... you could use a couple yellows, orange, etc. - and have a slow blend into the blue. The use of white will help to make the blend a bit smoother as well.

All in all though - nice job on the lighthouse. Give the oil-based pencil crayons a shot... I'd like to see a blended version of this drawing.

Keep it up Gabrielle!

Jeff :-)
