Drawing Tablets

So just what are - drawing tablets? Well, let me explain.

In the same way that you'd draw with a regular pencil, on a regular piece of paper... these devices work much the same - except it's on your computer!

Also known as 'graphics tablets' and even 'pen tablets', they're are an amazing tool for creating drawings on your computer, with your favorite image editing software such as Photoshop or Gimp.

Most people (much like myself), when first getting into the idea of 'drawing on the computer' begin by using their mouse. And in the same way you point and click with a mouse when surfing the internet... you can draw lines and create some pretty neat-looking pictures on the computer.

Drawing Tablets

In time though, especially if you want to have the same freedom drawing on your computer, that you do when drawing on a regular piece of paper... switching over to a tablet is definitely the way to go.

Simply described, they exist in two basic parts - the tablet itself (the part you draw on) and the stylus (the pen). When the stylus makes contact with the tablet's drawing surface, the strokes are reproduced - instantly and exactly on your computer screen.

Really, it's as simple as that!

If you're interested in trying out one for yourself, I recommend you go with a Wacom Bamboo. Wacom tablets are simply the best, and the Bamboo model is by far the most popular when you're just starting out. Of course, if you're looking for something a bit better - go with the Intuos model. This is the same model I used to create all the designs and lessons, here on the site.
