First thing, over the weekend + Monday/Tuesday - I was in the hospital due to an appendix surgery. Everything went well, but as such - I had to put some things on hold regarding the site. Things are back in 'full swing' now though - and it's back to a lesson a day, and much more!

Alright, let's get on with the newsletter...

1. Happy Halloween - Let's Draw!

Halloween takes place on the 31st. I've always loved this day, as truly - it encourages creativity in a number of different ways. From creating costumes - to carving pumpkins - to decorating... there are many ways to express your creative side.

Here at DrawCartoonsOnline.com, let's celebrate Halloween and Drawing, with a new addition to the Visitors' Gallery. Right now, you can submit 'Halloweenish' drawings - and at the same time - have a chance to win a $50.00 E-Card Gift Certificate for Dick Blick Art Supplies.

Halloween Drawings

The prize will be drawn at random after 12:00 EST on October 31st. Just be sure that when you submit your work to the gallery, you include your first name and a real email address - as this way - I can contact you if you're the winner!

I'll post the winner's name in the blog on Tuesday, November the 3rd @ 4:00pm EST.

All in all, this will be a fun way get in the spirit of Halloween - and drawing too!

2. What Cartoon Characters Would You Like to Draw First?

I really appreciate your input, by filling out the 'Draw Cartoon Characters' survey on the website. All of the ideas expressed, have really help to provide a better sense of what should be included in the upcoming book(s).

One thing I've learned up to now, is that focusing on one character at a time - may be the best way to go about explaining the character creation process. Similar to the lessons on the site, I like to 'teach by doing'. So by focusing on one character, from start to finish - you'll never get lost in the shuffle, and will always be able to refer back to the roots of which ever character we're working on.

Does this sound OK? Please send me a personal message using the contact form if there's something you'd like to add. Thank you! :-)

At about 80% complete, now's a good time I'd say - to see what types of characters we should target first. And to help, since you'll be the one using this brand new resource - I've created a second 'quick survey' - with a list of many different possibilities. Simply check off the ones you like, and the ones you don't --- leave blank.

Well, that's how things stand so far. Still a work in progress --- but ever so closer to being complete!!

3. New 'Drawing Software' Section

Something that's quite relevant to 'drawing online' - is the software we use. A number of great programs exist out there, and from all the time I've spent - creating cartoon artwork and drawing lessons, I've had the opportunity to test out pretty much all of them!

Beginning with Adobe Photoshop, you can check out this area of the site for information about how to use these drawing programs, and what makes them - well - good!

Another program I should mention here, is Gimp. It's completely free - and very similar to Photoshop. I'll be sure to add a section on this very soon.

Well, it's back to the drawing board for me. And I'm sure --- for you as well! I'm looking forward to seeing what 'spooky' creations you can come up with for the Gallery.

Jeff :-)
